searching by name
To find the images you need, enter the scientific name (Latin name) (ex:
Convallaria majalis), or the English common name (ex: Lily of the valley).
For English common names enter the SINGULAR form (ex: Lily not Lilies).
The clarification menu of Botanicon search engine will automatically prompt
you to clarify the definition of a keyword if that word has more than
one application.
searching by image number
From the drop-down menu in the Advanced Search, select Image Number.
Letters appearing in an image number may be entered as caps or lowercase.
taxonomic searching
This search option enables you to view the taxonomic hierarchy (Division,
Class, Order, Family, Genus, Specie). The hierarchy will display the elements
of all the ranks from Kingdom down to the rank you choose. Click on an
arrow to alternately expand and collapse the list of sub-categories. Clicking
on a macrocategory selects that category. Selecting an item from this
menu reveals the corresponding hierarchy of sub-categories. Click on an
arrow to alternately expand and collapse the list of sub-categories. Clicking
on a macrocategory selects that category.

related
terms list
The search results page displays thumbnail images that match your search
criteria. Under the thumbnails you can view botanical name and variety name.
On the left frame, a terms list displays the related categories. For example,
searching "Aster" on the left frame you will view the inferior
levels with all the species included (Aster alpinus, Aster amellus etc.)
and the superior level with the family name (Asteraceae).
info window
The info window (click on the "info" symbol under the thumbnail
images) shows detailed information about your selected image: image number,
copyright, related keywords and caption (with scientific name, Italian common
name and English common name when available).
